I am trying to eat more salads instead of potatoes on the side of my meals but I am having a hard time "feeling" full, and when I do eat enough to be full the feeling doesn't last long.

What can I do to make the full feeling last longer so that I am not craving the fatty foods my body is used to?

Make the salads more substantial (and tastier) by adding nuts, shaved almonds, chicken, avacado, tangerines, pears, and the list goes on!

... but doesn't that defeat the whole purpose of eating salad? It's like MacDonald's salad. From what I understand, it has enormous amount of calories, and it's not healthy at all.

That's primarily because of the dressing and crutons

If you pick the right toppings, it only adds to the healthfulness of the salad, like almonds or chicken breast for example

Chicken I have done, but the almonds I have never tried.

How about a bit of cheese? I have done that a few times.....does that hurt the healthiness of the salad?

The principle idea of eating salad is that you do not take fat as you eat salad. I personally like salad with cheese (and black pepper, garlic, olive oil, etc.); however, cheese has a lot of fat, so it kind of invalidates the very reason why you eat salad. There is nothing wrong with it, but depending on what you want to accomplish by eating salad, you may not want to put cheese.

you can always get a low-fat cheese Razz

or just sprinkle on some Parmisan, loads of flavour for a few calories

I'm not too crazy about "low fat" products for a couple of reasons:

1. Totally tasteless.

2. They have fat after all, so if you eat more than a certain amount, it makes no difference.

Diet in America is totally out of control. "low fat" products were introduced to appeal to consumers, but it really didn't address any fundamental problem. Eat reasonable amount of food. Stop drinking a gallon of soda. Stop eating product named "ice scream" which is actually saturated with sugar. "low fat" really doesn't do anything. Dysfunctional diet in America needs to change.

Those cravings is your body telling you that it is not getting the nutrients that it needs. You refer to salad as side dish--what is the main course?--that could be your problem .

I agree.. try adding nuts..
I used to add nuts and tuna to all my salads..
That made me feel so full that I could even replace dinners with just the salad + it makes salads taste a whole lot better! Smile

My advice would be to drink plenty of water with your meal. That can help you to feel full also.

general rule of thumb

drink half your weight in ounces per day. if you weigh 150 lbs drink 75 oz of water per day.

Not for feeling full but to avoid dehydration

Exactly! Also, why restrict what you eat at all? All that matters in the end is the amount you eat, and how much energy you burn during your average day.

I eat anything I want - just not a lot of anything. Weight stays the same. Wink

i find fresh parmesean ...not the grated kraft dried up old yucky stuff but deli fresh adds loads of flavour and it only takes a little bit...also lemon juice...

kraft lowfat italian dressing tastes the same as the origional...

a good low fat dressing is the "jamacian mistake" lite version very excellent and only takes a drop

try adding fruit to your salads as well like apple or oranges.

nuts are fatening but a good source of protien.

mrs dash and lemon juice combined is excellent on salads!

you can get low fat bread which has way less calories then regular bread....weight watchers bread is in most major grocery chains now ...toast it to make low fat crutons that might help with feeling fuller.

also maybe try schineders low fat ham slices cut up i do that often to add a nice twist

granted i am not much of a dieter i love to eat but i try to balance my hearty love of food with some good choices so i dont end up looking like the good year blimp.
