Hello everyone, I am from Nova Scotia were if you live in a coastal community you probably eat everything with salt.
I grew up with a lot of salt in my diet, but when I was in High School we stopped almost cold turkey and I really didin't mind.
Now I am hear hoping to learn how to lead a healthy lifestyle from everyone here and to reciprocate what I have learned over the years

Welcome, capebretoner!
Did you notice anything different physically when you stopped taking so much salt? Have you felt healthier since? Why do they use a lot of salt in Nova Scotia?? Very interested to know!

Welcome to the forum capebretoner!
There is no doubt that salt is very important, but taking too much salt isn't very healthy. A lot of coastal communities (that have some history) around the world eat food that contains a lot of salt largely because salt is used to preserve food. It made sense in the past, but as we develop technologies and techniques to preserve food, we no longer need to use so much salt. I think it's advisable that we reduce the amount of salt we use in our food.

Exactly right, however it is a hard habit to break when you have been doing it for decades.
When we cut down our salt to next-to-nothing I really didn't notice much health wise, however I did notice that foods tasted better
And it was such a while ago I can't really remember

I don't think there is any immediate dramatic effect, but taking too much salt is not very good for your kidneys in a long term.

Welcome aboard! I like salt added in just enough quantity to bring out the other flavours in the food. Of course back when I was a chef in the army, if I didn't add any, my CO woulda sent me running up a rather steep hill carrying something rather heavy!!!
