HUNDREDS of Harrovians brewed up for the world’s biggest coffee morning on Friday last week, raising more than £34,000 for Macmillan Cancer Relief.

More than 175 homes, offices, shops and schools hosted coffee mornings across the borough.

The charity expects to raise thousands for new Macmillan services, including a trainee scheme at Northwick Park Hospital, as a result of the events.

The trainee scheme will give three experienced nurses the chance to work with the Macmillan team for a year each and gain expertise in the care of cancer patients and their families.

The Macmillan team at Northwick Park raised £724 through a raffle and the sale of home-made cakes and refreshments.

The event was attended by the Mayor of Harrow, Councillor Paddy Lyne.

Fiona Vaz, lead Macmillan nurse, said: “We always really enjoy organising our coffee morning event and it’s great to know that the proceeds will provide further support for people with cancer in the local area.”

Councillor Lyne also attended a coffee morning organised by mother and daughter team, Sue and Julia Fenton, who raised £3,700 and have now brought in £12,000 for the charity since 2002.

Julia was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease in 2000, aged 24. She has found Macmillan to be a constant source of support.

Now in remission, Julia said: “My Macmillan nurses have always been there for me and have enhanced my positive and proactive attitude. This event gives my family and I the chance to give something back to this fantastic charity.”

Macmillan fundraising manager, Paul Stein, said: “We’ve had fantastic support from people across Harrow and would like to thank everyone. Their efforts will make a real difference to the lives of local people affected by cancer.”

Funny thing to do. Health effect of coffee is debatable. Maybe serving salads or fruit juice would be a better idea?

I'm sure the effects of a few people having coffee is outweighed by that much money being raised. Also "coffee morning" is just a phrase for these events - it's just a social gathering and doesn't necessarily require you to drink coffee.
