American Heart Association this week reported that the obesity epidemic is reaching down to the sandbox: More than 10 percent of U.S. children ages 2 to 5 are overweight; obesity is already a serious problem in US, but the situation does not seem to be getting any better. It seems to be getting worse. Being over-weight as an adult is certainly a health risk, but being over-weight as a child is much riskier, as it can cause to develop various diseases at an early age. Something needs to be done about this.

If you are obese at the age of 13, there is 80% chance of being obese for the rest of your adult life.

The only way to keep kids from getting fat is to take away the game consoles. When I was young I played many sports and when I was really young I spent a lot of time outside biking in the summer and sledding in the winter.
My littel cousin however HATES going sledding or doing anything outside. He would rather stay inside and play on his GBA for hours on end

What do you think about their diet? Is it more important or equally important?

I don't think it is nearly as important as activity, especially when they are young. I don't mean that they should live on pop and chips, but that they can eat burgers, and such, as long as they stay active.
When I was growing up I ate a lot of food that wasn't really healthy, a lot of fried food. But since I played on multiple sports teams, worked as a labourer and capenter I was never obese

But wouldn't you say that "bad food" a decade ago or a couple of decades ago were much more healthy?

I'm not sure if that's true. 20 or more years ago, people used (domestically in the UK, at least) to use stuff like lard a lot more. I hardly ever see people with lard in their fridge these days.
I remember as a kid we used to dip the bread of bacon sandwiches in the fat that had dripped off, and thought nothing about it. Nowadays, people cut off the rind..!

Partly true. For example, fast food chains didn't use potatoes that even workers didn't know where they got. They used good potatoes and peeled their skin at fast food restaurants. Then, they fried to make French fries. They took beef and they made ground beef. They made hamburger from that ground beef. Today, ground beef that you eat at a typical fast food restaurant comes from beef from thousands of cattle. Today, fast food is not a food; it is a product.

Or it comes from worm meat, depending on which reports you read.

It's not a genuine ground beef. That's for sure. You should take a piece of beef and make ground beef. That's how you should make ground beef. It's not uncommon to mix ground beef and ground pork, but even then, ground beef should come from one beef.
Oh, another thing, milk shake. Milk shake used to be made from ice cream. Today, it's a chemical product at most fast foot restaurants.

That's a good example... I see what you're getting at.

That reminds me... our little boy had some Arctic roll recently. I remember having this when I was a kid and I tasted it for what must have been the first time in 25 years. It was terribly sweet and I get the impression it had all kinds of preservatives and flavourings.

Sugar can be very addictive, and this is one of reasons why obese people cannot change their diet and lose weight. What is very concerning is that food companies are putting a lot of sugar into their products today. The sole purpose of this is that children get addicted to sugar. Once this is accomplished, these companies can keep feeding sugar as they grow up. Great way to capture consumers, but this is really destroying consumers' lives.

Perhaps there is something to this after all. I wonder why the body would store fat in the first place? Perhaps this is because it is getting used to not getting enough of its energy out of the food?
It would make sense to me anyway - we as organisms, realizing we're not always going to get enough energy out of the ground, we're looking to other methods like solar power, etc. Perhaps our bodies are similar organisms? Perhaps our bodies, lacking our daily energy requirement on a daily basis, uses its energy to rather turn what it's getting in into fat to be used as a much more readily available source of energy?
As we've mentioned lard, rinds and fat-drippings, where we never gave it a second thought, perhaps our bodies just never needed to store ny fat, since it was used to getting an abundance of fuel from our food?
How does it work with water-retention? Should you drink less water? Or more water?
