No, not surprising at all. I would guess that this trend largely reflects increasing obesity in the US.

Check our Dr. Bezruchka's speech on
this page. Making a long story very very short, the difference between rich and poor has only increased dramatically in US. The enormous difference between rich and poor puts a lot of pressure on a lot of people, in most cases, poor people; consequently, Americans deal with a lot more stress today. Again, I'm making a very very long story short; you should definitely check the speech.
