Nearly $20,000 was raised for childhood cancer research at an Oakland fund-raiser in support of an Alameda boy who must have liver surgery or possibly a transplant to survive, doctors said.

The event drew about 200 people and was at the Rotunda Building in Oakland. Real estate developer Phil Tagami, who hosted the event, presented the family of 22-month-old Dillon Clark — son of Richard and Diane Clark — with a proclamation from Mayor Jerry Brown naming Aug. 19 Dillon Clark Day.

The boy is in the immuno-compromised unit at Children’s Hospital Oakland and will be evaluated for a transplant at UC San Francisco. In December, he was diagnosed with an advanced stage of a rare form of liver cancer, hepatoblastoma. Dillon also had multiple lung tumors. He has had eight rounds of chemotherapy and three biopsies.

Family friend Elizabeth Moorehead said the fund-raiser was organized by a group of old friends, including Tagami, who attended Skyline High School, as did the Clarks.

All proceeds from the event went to CureSearch, which represents the combined efforts of the Children’s Oncology Group and the National Childhood Cancer Foundation, two organizations with the goal of finding a cure for childhood cancer.

I don't know what to make of the number. Did they raise a lot of money or not really?

I would say raising $20k from 200 people is not bad. That equates to $100 per person, if my maths is right.

That's true. Maybe there are many good people in the area.
