Summer camp with army-type strict rules and mandatory work on the field every day?
What can we do to make them slim and fit and energetic?

Required PA, physical activities in school.
1. Many schools are skipping PA to balance budget; this cannot be allowed.
2. We may want to increase the number of hours they are required to participate.

Both are must, though I'm not quite sure how they can be achieved.

Education reform needs to be done. K-12 education has so many problems, but now it's creating a serious health concern; this needs to change.

Well, weight problem comes from daily routine, so summer camp is probably not the answer. K-12 education needs to enforce students to do some regular exercise to a certain extent.

How about lawn mowing and snow shoveling? Is this too much to ask?

That's actually a good idea. Also cleaning school. Cleaning can be a good exercise and it teaches them about community service; this can also contribute to cost cutting in K-12 education. Something small like this can make a big difference.

Some basics are completely lacking in today's education; it might be a good idea to review something like what you guys suggest here. Cleaning your own school, why not? Higher education institutions are operated very differently and they have very different objectives, but K-12 education(in my opinion) should be teaching more than just math and writing. Maybe addressing more basic and fundamental issues can improve children's health over all.

You should give consideration when you use a public property as it is a shared property. For example, restrooms in parks and public buildings are not there to vandalize. There are also those who clean these public properties, restrooms included. I think it's pretty important to learn those things. Another example, which you brought up; nice clean green grass. They need to be maintained; they don't just grow and stay neat. They are a public property as well(in many cases). They are those who mow and take care of grass. Our society has a structure so that everyone feels happy. Shouldn't children learn those things? Clean your school's restroom, mow your school's football field, is it such a bad idea?

Those are very good points.
I would definitely add one very specific point to this: "loud music means total disrespect for people around you".

That's a thought, thought it will be quite difficult to send parents on the camps.

Would it?
In the same way you must do community service if you do a crime, why not have a situation where you go on a camp if you let your child get too obese?
I'm not being totally serious of course, but it is a thought...
