At what age would you say mental illnesses normally first manifest themselves....? In the first few years, in teenage years, or later...?

I think it shows up at any age. I think that, if and when you suffer from mental illness at an early age, there is a good chance that you'll carry on for many years. Even if that itself is cured, you don't have positive memory. One's life can go to a wrong direction because of that.

It does manifest itself at early age. It starts when normal people start treating a kid as though there were something wrong with him. This makes the kid uncomfortable, so the kid modifies his behaviour to adapt. This looks odd, and confirms people's suspicions about the kid, and treat him more abnormally. A vicious circle!
A good book to read: "The Manufacture of Madness" ~ Thomas S. Szasz (hope I spelled the name right! lol ~ maybe I'm just mad!)

Question: What are effective treatments? What should those who suffered from mental illness at an early age be doing?

I think it's quite difficult for somebody who believes he's got something wrong with his mind to change.
It would take to unlearn the fallacy, and relearn how to be himself, and feel comfortable in is skin.
I really don't believe in there being something wrong with a person's mind...

This might be one cause but I don't think it's the sole one. Mental illness can be the effect of a variety of factors, the way in which the person is treated being just one. Look at something like anorexia... it's thought people suffer from that sometimes as a result of just looking at magazines...

Modern computers are still primitive devices.

Nothing worse than having a long post disappear!
If I'm in the mood for a long post, I copy it into notepad first before posting. Saves me staring in disbelieve at the screen when it has disappeared, leaving me feeling all empty inside - contemplating... whether it will be a cup of tea or coffee before I sit down and begin again!

You know what? I do this all the time. I have one email message open all the time. Not only I can mitigate the risk of losing my writing, but also I can check my spelling.
