"Warden Jon P. Galley orders flowers, there is no escaping his message: Prisons are too grim. For years,
Mr. Galley has been brightening Maryland prisons and jails by having flowers planted on their grounds. His
latest project, at Western Correctional Institution (WCI), also is his most ambitious: a meditation garden
where inmates can sit beside a gurgling fountain amid marigolds, yellow lilies, white roses and scarlet
snapdragons.

"I believe absolutely that the environment need not be as stark and austere as they typically are in these
institutions," Mr. Galley said at a June 16 dedication ceremony. "I believe in color, and I believe in
anything that can help soften this environment for both the staff and the inmates."

Do you think that this comes into the prison budget...or the inmates build it themselves??

Confused

Funding and budgeting for correctional facilities has been always controversial. Managing correctional facilities is a big business in US, but how about in UK?

They're all govt run. That's what the HMP stands for before the prison name here - Her Majesty's Prison! Smile

They call it 'being detained at Her Majesty's pleasure'!! Laughing

It's not something we hear that often, but it is a big part of US economy. Given how many correctional facilities there are and how many inmates there are, it has certain impact.

What ever happened to the idea that Prison was supposed to be a punishment? I'm sorry but I really am against the idea of prisons providing environments that are far superior to what people had prior to their life of crime.

Perhaps this warden should be retired to his own little meditation garden..... bring in a warden who understands the difference between Prison and the Hilton.

Most inmates go to back to prison, once they get out of there. That suggests that whatever punishment they get inside prison isn't really transforming them. So, we have to recognize that there is a systematic problem.
