People who consume large quantities of red and processed meats are at an increased risk of developing colon cancer, and in some cases, by as much as 50 percent, according to a new study.
The American Cancer Society study surveyed close to 150,00 people ages 50 to 74 about their health and eating habits.
The findings appear in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
The study showed that people who consumed high amounts of red and processed meat over a long period of time had a 50 percent higher risk of developing colon cancer, compared with those eating the least.
Red meat was defined as beef, pork and lamb. Processed meat included bacon and bologna. The researchers described high red meat consumption for men as 3 ounces per day, and 2 ounces per day for women.
Now for some good news. The study found chicken and fish consumption actually lowered the risk of developing colon cancer.
