What's the worst illness you've ever had?

I had a problem with my nervous system when I was very young, and I think that's the worst illness I had.

My parents were very worried for number of obvious reasons. I didn't know that as a child, but in retrospect, I guess I had a very serious condition.

Thais,
All I can say is that it felt 10 times worse than the worst flu I ever had.
I was 9 years old, and I liked to bring my cat in at night. I picked her up, she was mad, and scratched me on my neck. 2 weeks later my lymph nodes were swollen, I was very dizzy & could barely walk staright, no appeitite, weak, etc....
Had to stay in the hospital for 4 days. It doesn't cause most people a problem at all. I don't know why it affected me so badly.

Maybe you got some kind of infection from the wound?

Yeah, it must be. Some people are allergic to cat, but if it's the case, then touching cat makes you sick. Since you (apparently) got sick by the scratch, it must be an infection.

Yeah, what it came from was the cat herself contacting a disease (the bacteria has some name) from another cat.
Cats pass along this bacteria, and it doesn't really make them sick, but it'll make a human sick if they lick, scratch, or bite you. I've had a lot of cats as pets, so I've been bitten, scratched, etc, by them a lot. Hers was the only time I got sick. I think it's because she herself was sick.
I'm glad it wasn't in my eye though. It will cause your eye to swell up twice it's size.

Glandular fever as a teen. Now that was the worst! Took a few months for me to fully recover!

Maybe this could be a contributing factor to why my immune system is so "kickass!!!" ?

The sound of glandular fever sounds like it must have been an absolute terrible illness. I've never heard of it. What were the symptons?

You can read about it here:

Nice to know, though, that I'm now immune for life since I've had it once already.

I went to hospital with Anaphylactic shock because some moronic Army Doctor prescribed a pennicillin based antibiotic - I learned the hard way that I am allergic to pennicillin!
It was an interesting experience; I recall being really concerned about the amount of drugs being stuck into me via the IVs going into each arm. This due to the drugs testing scheme in the Army - I was a senior person and I didn't want to be found positive, it would have been career ending.

Quite a few people are allergic to penicillin, so the chart has a check box for penicillin. Doctor is supposed to check if you are allergic to it or not. In the worst case scenario, you lose conscious and die. I'm glad that you came out ok, but this type of mistakes shouldn't be repeated anywhere.
