What proportion of your exercise should be weights and what should be cardiovascular?

It would be interesting to get views from both male and female sides.

I don't think you actually need to lift weight in order to stay healthy and physically fit, but it's my opinion.

Don't you think a basic core strength is important?

I think it's very important, but I'm not so sure if lifting weight will actually help to build the core strength. I feel like there are better exercises. But I'll be honest here and need to tell you that it's my hunch more or less. I'm no professional trainer.

I do much more CV and less weights, just because it's what I prefer. I should probably change the balance a little but it's hard when you enjoy one much more than the other.

Longevity is not the only thing that counts, but I think it's a very important statistic to look at. I'm guessing to a certain extent, but I don't think those who live long have big muscles; consequently, I'm guessing that lifting weight and building big muscles does not necessarily make you healthier.

If you lift weights you don't turn into Arnie you know Smile

Weights can help build strength without gaining enormous muscles.

When I used to go gym, I attended exercise classes like cardio boxing class and spinning class. I seem to remember that there were significantly more women than men. Also I think most men typically spend a lot of time lifting weight while they do not spend much time using treadmill and doing other cardio exercises. It's my impression that many men focus too much on weight lifting.

Yes, you're probably right. But of course to get the six pack stomach and things like that you need to do lots of cardio to keep your fat down.

Now that it's summer I try to cycle to and from the gym and get my cardio exercise that way. Using a treadmill or exercise bike in the gym itself is very boring.

I agree. Even walking. Something like hiking is fun and refreshing while treadmill gets you bored easily.

Everyone says running on a treadmill is boring, but I actually don't see it that way. When I'm running, I actually think a lot about the pace I'm doing, what time I'm trying to achieve, etc. etc. The display on a treadmill helps keep me focussed towards my goals. But yeah... with this weather... running outside is far better. Cool

There is a talk of making treadmill like a video game, and this might make exercising much more fun.

We had this at my old university gym. It was an exercise bike and you had 4 games you could play on it, the faster you peddled the more power you had in the game.

Some instructors really push us hard, and they almost try to kill us. I remember I had good meal and lots of water when I had an instructor like that.
