By any measure, Americans are the biggest people on earth and they consume commensurately. One of the most striking things to a first time visitor to these united states is the large average size of people s/he comes across not too long after landing.
They are huge and not a few need motorised aids to help them move about short distances in buildings.
How large is the problem of size in America? According to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, America is experiencing an obesity epidemic.

What concerns me is that other countries (eg. the UK) are also following in the US's footsteps. Is the whole western world going to follow in this obesity trend?

Hopefully not, but I do think that US needs to start tackling this problem as soon as possible. It is a fact that many countries follow US trend; if US keeps serving super size fries and burgers, there is a good chance that other countries will follow eventually. That'll be disaster ...

You'd think the huge amount of medical expertise in the US would get people to stop and think. Does the US government not run public health ads to warn people of the dangers of bad eating and obesity? Surely that would be a start...

The head of US healthcare department(???) was expressing his concern over obesity. But the fact of the matter is that lobbyists representing food companies are all over Washington. I don't see any effective ad running on TV any time soon.

I live in a part of England which is near Scotland. The Scottish aren't renowned for eating healthily and we often see TV ads from Scottish health authorities warning of bad habits... I'm sure some must take note.

Avoiding fatty foods, smoking... that sort of stuff.
Stuff that deep down we all know we should do, but sometimes we don't.

Yeah, it's just the Scot have a reputation for not resisting them, more than their English counterparts.

Which would be better? Stop smoking & start eating more? Or smoke & eat less?

Smoke and eat less might be better, but I don't think that anti-smoking campaign in US directly (and significantly) contributes to Americans' weight gain.

Don't think the anti-smoking campaigners would like to read that, but it is true that smoking supresses the appetite, not so?

I think it does. You can also lose a lot of weight by smoking all day long and eating just apples and oranges.
Quitting smoking isn't the healthiest thing to do, contrary to what many believe. What often happens is that people gain a lot of weight after they quit smoking. Since weight gain is so sudden, they develop heart diseases.
